My man Chris from Iron Vaquero sent me a postcard from the road. From the sound of things, the ride is going good. Can't wait to see some shots from the trip. Travel safe buddy, hope the road is kind to you.

So the Lady Hump Blogosphere Challenge has come to an end. Big props and congrats to Kustom Jeff for continuing to kick-ass with his photography and coverage of all things motorcycle in the Birmingham area. Black Diamond Orbit Lantern
Saw this in Show Class, looks like a smaller better made version of the Coleman Lantern I already have. A good basic light source when you want to wash an area, not just have a focused beam.

Bedroll
There are a couple options here, the Oregon Bedroll and the Don Wood bedroll. I am plenty happy with my sleeping bag but I have heard these things are beyond awesome and I would like to have the option. If you have either of these, let me know what you think.

Magic Tarpit
The bastard offspring of a tarp and a space blanket, this thing does it all. Grommets to make a shelter or cover your bike, a hood and pockets to stay warm, etc etc. As cheap as they are, it is a wonder I haven't ordered one of these yet. See it and a bunch of other cool gear at polerstuff.com.

Awhile back I ordered a shirt from Deathtraps MC. For whatever reason, the wrong shirt was sent. When I brought it to their attention, they agreed to send the right shirt, no questions asked, and did not want me to send back the wrong shirt. The correct order arrived with some stickers and a free koozie.
I appreciate stand up people, people who do what they say are going to do. A couple times recently I held up my end of the bargain and never got what was agreed from the other end. Things like this=sucks.

Also got this key chain from Iron Vaquero. Check out that stationary, it's pretty badass.

Gear-Lights

I've looked around and found that most of the quality high-candlepower LED lights are damned expensive. Many also use special batteries that might be difficult or at the least inconvenient to find on the road. I've been using the same mini-Maglites for years. Extremely well engineered and near bullet proof, we have several of these around the house including the one in my pack.

Nite Ize makes some great upgrades and accessories for these flashlights. In addition to the LED upgrade, I also use the IQ switch. This converts the light to push button operation meaning you don't have to focus the beam each time you want to use the light. It also adds additional modes: 50%, 25%, slow strobe and fast strobe. The push button dome has a flashing red led that flashes every 3 to 4 seconds, a life saver if you drop it in the dark.

Their elastic head strap turns the Mag into a headlight. Useful and economical so I won't flip my shit if I happen to lose it or lend it. 

                                                           

Before going to California my wife surprised me with a package of useful road items. Among them was this mini Coleman lantern. It runs on AA batteries and is surprisingly bright. I kept it clipped into the attachment point on the hammock right behind my head. Came in handy for the late night nature calls.

Changes

Went out to the garage Friday to take a look at the rear end of the bike. I'd been meaning to take the strut covers off for some time. The rear turn signals have been bothering me a lot lately. I had the idea to mount a single signal on top of the rear fender. Before I knew it I was unbolting and cutting wires. Time ran away from me and I ended up finishing up Saturday afternoon.

Ass end in pieces, tools and parts galore. All the wiring on newer HDs is quick disconnect. The connectors barely fit through the fender struts...pain in the ass.

There are some brackets and crap that I need to cut off this fender. I was a little reckless with it during this project knowing it needed to be trimmed and repainted. 

To get the wires through the top of the fender, I had to cut them. I soldered and shrink wrapped them together before realizing the relocation would require more length. I cut them, added length and did it all again.

My first thought was to make a channel in the existing hole to run the wiring through. For mounting reasons, this ended up not being an option. When in doubt, drill baby drill...

Finished product. The verdict is still out with me, I'm not 100% sold on it. I'm toying with the idea of just running the single light on a shortened stem on the tag side.

I went for a ride, it didn't suck. Even getting stopped at a train crossing was relaxing. It got cold later in the day and I regretted not riding in gloves. Then I remembered some people's riding seasons gets interrupted with blizzards and I didn't feel so cold anymore.
